Education
Education is at the heart of Return to Freedom’s mission. Through hands-on programs, guided tours, and immersive experiences at our sanctuaries, we connect people to the lives of wild horses and burros—building understanding, empathy, and advocacy. Our goal is to inspire informed action and a deeper respect for the world we share.
Experiential Learning at RTF
Programs & Events
Join us at our sanctuaries for guided tours, Wild Horse Hikes, Photo Safaris, and immersive workshops that bring you face to face with the mustangs and burros who call these hills home. You'll learn to recognize herd hierarchies, observe communication and movement patterns, and see how natural grazing shapes healthy ecosystems. Led by experienced guides, these programs offer an intimate view of wild horse behavior and the humane management practices that protect them.

Educator & Student Learning
RTF partners with educators to create experiential learning opportunities through
field trips and virtual sessions that illuminate the intersections of wildlife
biology, public land policy, and conservation ethics. Students explore how human
decisions—about land, water, and law—affect the lives of wild herds, and how
science-based solutions like fertility control can help sustain them. These programs
inspire critical thinking and environmental stewardship in the next generation.

Webinars & Talks
Our webinars and speaker series feature scientists, advocates, and policymakers
exploring current issues shaping wild horse and burro management. Topics range from
the science behind fertility control and ecological balance to the civic processes
that influence federal policy. Participants learn how advocacy, research, and compassionate
action intersect to shape the future of conservation.

Volunteer & Hands-On Learning
Volunteers become part of the living classroom—helping with daily herd care, habitat
maintenance, event support, and visitor engagement. Through this hands-on work,
you'll gain insight into how sanctuary operations model humane management and
regenerative land practices, and see the tangible impact of care, consistency, and
stewardship on animal and ecosystem health.
